There are roughly 600 chateau in St Emilion but not all produce wines under the prestigious St Emilion Grand Cru Classé appellation. Given its name after the 8th century when a monk called Emilian settled here, the town quickly became one of the most sought after in terms of wine. St Emilion is home to one of the oldest wine fraternites in the world. The Jurade de Saint-Émilion, a brotherhood of wine lovers, has been safeguarding the region's wine traditions since 1199!

Sometimes a second visit is possible before lunch in a cosy vineyard bistrot or restaurant, sometimes in the chateau themselves. Remember France shuts down from 12- 2 pm. Another visit after lunch is generally all we have time for then back to your hotel. All the while your guide will fill you in on the who's who and what's what of Bordeaux. You'll be the expert at the end of the day.
Each visit lasts between 1 - 2 hrs. and is conducted by an english speaking guide in the chateaux. The visits cover the vines, grape varieties, wine making and end with a tasting of several wines.
NB: Tasting sizes are small in France, generally 2-3 oz.

One of the most fascinating aspects of St. Emilion's medieval history is its iconic Monolithic Church. This extraordinary church was carved entirely out of solid rock from the 9th to the 19th centuries. It's a testament to the skill and dedication of the region's builders, who painstakingly shaped the church's intricate details from the surrounding limestone. There are nearly 200 kilometers of underground caves under the cobble stoned streets of the village. The church's unique architecture and historical significance have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
